Von
Mentzingen - Many heirs of this noble family are listed
in the History Books- Neues allgemeines deutsches Adels-lexicon
- Page 239 This family is often listed as VON und ZU Mentzingen
which simply means of and from both the family and the land/place
that may be still owned by the family. The Mentzingen name
is listed here as a notation because many Mentz emmigrants
had their name shortened via authorities listing the name
as such.
Bischoff
von Mentz "ArchBishop of Mentz" or sometimes spelled
Meintz. This was a Prince Bishop. See: Archiv Fur Reformationsgeschichte:
Archive for Reformation History - Page 264 - These Holy
Roman Princes or Electors ruled over the ancient Holy Roman
City of Mentz and surrounding lands of what is now Rhineland
Palatinate for almost 1500 years. They were also Royal Bishops.
The Prince Electors or Archbishops of Mentz traditionally
were primas germaniae, the substitutes of the Pope north
of the Alps. In 2001 the current Bishop of Mentz or Mainz
(in German) Karl Lehmann was appointed a Cardinal by Pope
John Paul II. The first verifiable Bishop of Mentz was Mar(t)inus
in 343. Aside from Rome, the See of Mentz is the only other
see referred to as a "Holy See", although this
usage became rather less common.
Further
there is a historic connection between the name Mentz or
Menz and the name Meinhard - Deutsche Namenkunde: Unsere
Familiennamen nach ihrer Entstehung und Bedeutung by Max
Gottschald - 1954 - 630 pages Page 429
Further,
there may also be ancient noble Mentz Clans still located
in the Mecklenburg region of Germany. This house we believe
is called Menz von Ravensburg which was in the Western Pomerania
area near Hamburg in Northern Germany. Also of interested
is Menzingen OR Now Listed on maps as: Kraichtal, Baden-Württemberg,
Germany. For research purposes, the Menz and Mentz families
should note that Menzingen and the Barons of Menzingen in
Kraichtal/Menzingen are located only 39 miles from the Northern
part of the Weinstrasse or Wine Route where many Menz or
Mentz families were from.

Mentzel, Menzinger, Menz, Mentzingen,
Mentzelsberg and Freiherren.

Before 1800, the name Menz, Menze or Menzen was more commonly
used; however, the MenTz version was used and developed
over the recent history of Germany (last 300 years). Commentators
on German history have researched and suggest that Men(t)z
is low german or a shorter/pet name for Meinhard or Meinrich.
